Jennifer & Bill

I’m still pulling old stock out from the archives. I find it fun to reminisce about the good (& some not so good) times I have had with the great people I have met over the years – Jenn & Bill were a fun loving, energetic couple with a great big family around them for love & support.

& back to memories of winter...

A monotone image from a monotone day. I had to climb a skinny little tree, then hang from one of the branches to get the angle & composition that the site presented - I did have a couple of vehicles slow down to see what the weirdo was doing – oh well, let them stare :)

Finally! Spring is here!

Oh, I wish I had more time to do this...to get out in the fresh air, enjoy the warm sun as the days get longer - I will take them when they come!

Brodee & Sarah

Again with scouting this location earlier in the week I was hoping for some amazing light from the setting sun behind them - this obviously didn't happen. On the short drive over from the previous location I remembered an image similarly backlit but with rain falling on the couple instead – it was a cool shot & I thought I could try the same idea here. I’m wondering if I had moved the lights in closer with the power dialled down slightly, I would have caught the falling snow more crisply? Will have to keep it in mind for next time!

Winterfest 2011

Wow! What a great event hosted back in February! Over 900 participants from across the province travelled to Haliburton for the senior winter games. I could not have been more inspired by these people. As I watched them throw themselves across the court, digging for balls & throwing down smashes that made me want to play; I couldn’t help but hope that I would be in as great shape as they are when I am their age.

Check out the below links for the Opening & closing ceremonies of the games – I was honoured by being the official photographer for them.

Where else could you see The Amazing Kreskin & Don Cherry together on the same stage!?

Brodee & Sarah

So by now it’s almost 5pm & getting dark real quick. I was hoping for a parting of the clouds to get some images with a setting sun &/or some great colour – but it wasn’t meant to be. I had scouted this location specifically for this. The snow, however, kept softly falling & it was still fairly mild for a mid January day & these last few images turned out magic with the light from my flashes catching & highlighting the flakes of snow. Going with the flow & not getting to anxious is the key to staying calm - & working with what you got can provide you with some great surprises!

Spring fever

I cannot wait for bike season to start up; spring fever has officially set in! The outdoor shop I work at is going to bring in bicycles for the upcoming season (Specialized & Devinci) & I am ecstatic & keen to get users out on them! I have been in training for the last month or so in bike tuning & it is going to be a real asset to add to my resume – cheers to a great season!

Client shoot

Client shoot by Chasing Light Studio ~ Pie's Photography

This is from the archives. I visited this spot a couple of summers ago & had a lot of fun scouting & shooting in all the available locations. This family was fun & children always add a great twist to shooting. You really have to be ready to get the shot, because most times you only get one chance or else their attention goes elsewhere pretty quickly – like to the bag of potato chips sitting behind me!

Brodee & Sarah

Brodee & Sarah by Chasing Light Studio ~ Pie's Photography

This was a really peaceful spot, that mild & snowy afternoon. That is, until I showed up.
I ran, hopped, clambered, tripped, fell, cursed & bruised my shins getting to & from my light stand locations & back to my shooting spot (which of course was balanced on an icy rock in the middle of the creek).
Honestly, this was some of the most fun I have had with my camera. This was a challenging shoot & I was prepared for it – maybe over prepared – but it was worth it because the images turned out great!

Jennifer & Bill

Another image of Jenn & Bill from a couple of summers back. The day threatened of rain but it managed to hold off all day & it eventually cleared for a fine afternoon!

Brodee & Sarah

I have been itching to get to this site for a long while to shoot a portrait session. Luckily Brodee & Sarah fit the bill perfectly. I did however, feel like rookie. From slipping into the cold frigid water & getting wet feet & dropping flashes in the fresh powder & icy waters. Everything beyond that went smoothly.
The reflection of the light in the water gets me – it looks like it could be moonlight – the starburst behind her knee tops it all off. Check the image out in a large format to appreciate all the details – thanks, CPie.

Sarah & Brodee

A fun shot, but serious looking, with Brodee & Sara. They allowed me to stretch my legs in a bit of creative freedom. This is by no means an original idea or concept; I have seen many versions of this with all sorts of different variables. I was attracted to the symmetry of the scene & the serious expressions only lend to the overall mood & tone of the day. If it had been a blue bird day I may have asked them to say “cheese” for a toothy grin. Their smiling faces would be an interesting juxtaposition against the dark run down building.

Beautiful blue eyed boy.
This was one of the few times he wasn't chasing me or moving about.

Burnt River

I squeezed in a walk the other sunny afternoon on a great piece of property known as the Dahl Forest here in the Highlands. The Forest is a 500-acre private conservation area and has waterfront on the Burnt River. here for more details of the property: http://www.haliburtonlandtrust.ca/dahl_forest/dahl_forest.php
I have been hatching out the minor details of a canoe trip on the river this summer – thinking it will be the first one I take my son Parker on - can’t wait!

Sarah & Brodee

This second location we visited has been a favourite of mine since I came across it a few years ago. Moody, creepy & full of stories, the remains of Standard Chemical can be found in Donald, A small town located on cnty rd 1 between Haliburton Village & Gelert.
"They took advantage of the forest resources to manufacture charcoal, acetate of lime, wood alcohol and other by products in a process called the "Ditalitive Destruction of Wood". Wood was brought into the plant and the finished products were taken out along the Victoria Railway.
A fascinating place with a lot of history & the main structure has been noted because of its unique formed concrete construction & architecture.

got a devils haircut in my mind.

This song came across the head phones while practicing my lighting the other night – it couldn’t have been more fitting. I never did get around to giving him a proper cut... Sharpness is off. I was using a head lamp to light the scene to grab focus – a little awkward to manoeuvre the camera with one hand.

Maddex

This little guy was on the move and I spent most of the evening just trying to avoid him! Can you see it in his eyes...? That look, where he wants to put the camera strap in his mouth & gum up my lens with finger prints? Wait, he already did that - and he wanted more!

Sarah & Brodee

I had a fun afternoon photographing Sarah & Brodee at 3 different locations in the county in 3 hours. Sarah was such a trooper, trudging her way through deep snow drifts, standing around waiting while I fiddled with light &/or camera settings - she was after all, dealing with a head cold. Thank goodness the afternoon was a mild one - I was over dressed by at least 1 full layer. I was also carrying around 2+ lbs of extra weight – I had extra batteries in a hip pouch close to my body to keep warm. All in all a great afternoon & we got some great images from the day! Thanks again Sarah & Brodee!

Buckslides

What a beautiful morning! And cold! The misty cold air kept freezing my eyelashes to my cheeks & the snow had this most amazing squeaky crunch sound under my boot. I could of spent all day out there, thanks Erin for the heads up on this location.

What an amazing adventure & we are all rooting for you! Safe journey & I can’t wait to hear all the stories when you are back!
CPie

Old & forgotten, this scanned 35mm negative has been filed away for some time; same with the digital file.  In Photoshop I did some minor cloning to remove dust spots & scratches & then a curve adjustment to remove the cyan colour cast. I love finding an image that, for some reason was previously passed over.
These magnificent beasts before you are: in lead ‘Spirit’ (copper/white) & ‘Devil’ {I think) (silver/white). Both have bi eyes which is common in the husky bread. In point position you see ‘Chance’ (black/white). He was a brute of a dog – in size only though – very gentle & loved to go for a run.
Get outside & do something fun this winter!

Winterfest 2011

From February 15th to 17th, Haliburton County will play host to the Ontario Senior Games - Winterfest. All competitors are 55 years of age or over and are great examples of what a healthy, active lifestyle can do to improve health and your senior years. We hope we'll see you there!

Barred Owl

For the amount of time I spend outdoors, this is the only wild owl I have had the pleasure of viewing & photographing. It’s not due to the lack of effort – I have found pellets at the base of trees & heard plenty of them call.
Maybe it is time to visit Amherst Island – I’ve heard some great reports come out of there – anyone up for a road trip?

Head Lake Park

Head Lade Park at dusk, in the fall, is a magical & wonderful place. Along with the warm weather & fantastic setting, you have children laughing off in the distance & you can catch snippets of conversation as passer biers leisurely stroll by.
I have numerous images of this scene in different seasons, moods & light  - it’s my favourite place to be in the park.

Sheila Ziman
Sheila Ziman draws inspiration from the Haliburton landscape. She gathers rushes, bark and vines from the forests and waters near her home to craft her baskets and shares her extensive knowledge of these natural materials with her students. Sheila is noted for creating unique quillwork designs on birch bark and experimenting in new forms of basket making. Her baskets are exhibited in galleries throughout Ontario and she is a frequent demonstrator at special events. Sheila has great enthusiasm for basket making. "Out in a canoe gathering rushes, then home to make a basket - a wonderful way to enjoy nature and make something beautiful!"
